DINA Arrives at Another Watershed
Posted January 27, 2011
Daniel Island Neighborhood Association (DINA) will hold its annual election meeting on Tuesday February 8th at 7:00 PM at Holy Cross Church. Please give careful consideration to run for one of the four officer positions, (President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary). DINA’s place in the Daniel Island community is extremely important. DINA represents all the residents of the island. DINA has a seat on a committee that is recognized by the City of Charleston that brings to the Mayor issues that are of concern to the community.
DINA in the past and present has had major impact in expressing its opinions and desires on the plans for Daniel Island. DINA in conjunction with the Cainhoy Community and other surrounding Communities succeeded in defeating the placing of the Global Gateway Port on Daniel Island. Most recently, Mac McBride, as Chairman of the DINA Parks Committee, fought tirelessly to get our long promised major recreational facility, Governors Park. Currently DINA with the help of Councilman White is discussing a major safety issue with the city. The streets on the island are too narrow to accommodate legal parking on both sides of the street. It is not possible for emergency vehicles (ambulance, fire trucks) to pass to attend to an emergency when vehicles are parked legally on each side of the street. DINA is pursuing the implementation of enforcing parking on only one side, to eliminate this dangerous condition. Also, since the Global Gateway is no longer to be built on Daniel Island, the States Ports Authority has been mandated by the state to dispose of the land on Daniel Island. The manner in which this land is disposed of and utilized will have an enormous impact on the quality of life for all residents of Daniel Island. DINA as a representative of all the residents of Daniel Island can have input to the decision makers.
DINA has been, is and could be a very viable and influential organization with the help and support of you, the individual resident.
In addition DINA has offered numerous social and political agendas at its meetings. We have hosted Senator Jim DeMint, Berkeley County Supervisor Dan Davis, Mayor Joe Riley, the Fire Chief and the Police Chief of the City of Charleston. We have had presentations from the Gibbes Museum, an expert on the local Gullah culture and a very successful art walk.
Help support your community, consider running for an office of DINA. Come to the election meeting on Tuesday February 8th, at 7:00 PM at Holy Cross Church and all the Quarterly meetings of DINA during the year.
