We Need Your Opinion! (Bike Path Extension on Daniel Island Drive)
Posted March 16, 2010
During our March meeting, Berkeley County Councilman Tim Callanan told residents about a proposed grant for a project to extend the bike path on Daniel Island Drive from Fairchild Street to Blackbaud and beyond to the Shell Ring neighborhood. Please contact us to let us know what you think about this proposed project so we can present Councilman Callanan everyone’s views. According to the Councilman, the path will have the following benefits:
- A safe way for DI residents to get to Blackbaud for work or to Blackbaud Stadium. (It is the only place on DI not accessible by sidewalk or bike path.)
- A safe way for Blackbaud clients to get from Hampton Inn to the Blackbaud office building.
- A safe way for kids to get from Blackbaud Stadium to practice fields during soccer camps.
- A safe way for kids to get from Shell Ring to the Daniel Island School.
- No studies show that extending sidewalks or bike paths result in an increase in crime.
- A safe way to cross the bridge over the creek. Currently, the board walk over the bridge is quite narrow and unstable.
- More pedestrian/bike traffic means less vehicular traffic and shorter lines to pick up children from school.
Note: Because of drainage problems, the path will more than likely be built on the Blackbaud side of the street.
